India was the first country to recognize Bangladesh as a separate and independent country and established diplomatic relations with the country immediately after its independence in December 1971. The relationship between India and Bangladesh is anchored in history, culture, language and shared values of secularism, democracy, and countless other commonalities between the two countries. It is based on sovereignty, equality, trust, understanding and a win-win partnership that goes far beyond a strategic partnership. In the last couple of years, the relationship has been further strengthened including through cooperation in new and high-technology areas.
With the onset of economic liberalization in South Asia, India & Bangladesh forged greater bilateral engagement and trade. They are close strategic partners in counter-terrorism. They are also the largest trading partners in South Asia.

High Commissioner Shri Dinesh Trivedi met Mr. Mahdi Amin, Adviser to the Prime Minister for Ministry of Education, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, Ministry of Labour and Employment and Spokesperson of Prime Minister's Office, on 17 September 2026.
The meeting highlighted the enduring bonds between India and Bangladesh, rooted in strong people-to-people ties. They discussed the importance of further deepening the bilateral partnership for the mutual benefit and prosperity of the peoples of the two sovereign nations, with particular emphasis on cooperation in education, technology and innovation.

High Commissioner of India Shri Dinesh Trivedi met the Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Mr. M Rashiduzzaman Millat on 16 Sep 2026.
They held discussions on wide ranging topics including enhancing bilateral cooperation in the field of civil aviation, improving air connectivity, enhancing air cargo capacity, improving bilateral working mechanisms and promoting tourism.

IGCC, HCI Dhaka organized a special dance theatre performance titled “Dhora Taru Kabyo - Nature’s Tale” inspired by Kobi Guru Rabindranath Tagore’s celebrated poem “Brikkho Bondona” at Chhayanaut Auditorium on 11th September, 2026.
The dance performance was presented by Turongomi Repertory dance theatre led by Ms. Pooja Sengupta, Artistic Director.The performance beautifully explored the timeless relationship between nature and mankind through the powerful medium of dance and theatre.
Speaking at the occasion, High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi highlighted the rich cultural ties between India and Bangladesh, rooted in their shared heritage, literature and love for nature. He said that the performance reminds us of the shared responsibility to respect and preserve Mother Nature.

Both sides discussed a range of topics of mutual interest pertaining to railways, shipping, connectivity and bilateral development projects. They underscored the importance of strengthening connectivity between India and Bangladesh as a key enabler of economic engagement and closer people-to-people ties.

They discussed the progress of bilateral cooperation mechanisms in the areas of wildlife conservation and habitat protection, as well as opportunities to further strengthen cooperation on transboundary pollution, waste management, and other environmental issues of mutual interest
